AI content without the sameness

By Annette Skinner, Ruckus Collective · August 2026 · 6 min read

When half the web sounds the same, sounding generic is the same as being invisible. Here is how to use AI and keep your voice.

The web is now half machine-written

By early 2025 the share of new online articles written mostly by AI drew level with human-written ones, and by late 2025 it edged past, holding at around half. A separate analysis of close to a million new pages found roughly three quarters contained some AI-generated text, though most of that is a human and AI mix rather than pure machine output. The default has shifted. Publishing more is easy now. Sounding like someone is the hard part.

Sameness is the real risk, not speed

Most AI content does not fail because a machine wrote it. It fails because it sounds like everything else, so it earns no attention and ranks for nothing. When the model everyone uses produces the tone everyone gets, generic becomes invisible.

Keep the brief and the final word human

The research points to a workable split. AI does its best work in the middle of the process, drafting, repurposing and tidying, while the brief and the final edit stay human. A common rule of thumb keeps at least a third of any piece human-led, covering judgement, accuracy and voice. That is not a limitation. It is what stops your content dissolving into the average.

Give the model a voice to follow

Feed the tool your actual voice, your positioning, the phrases you use and the ones you never do. Governance matters too, because accuracy is the risk marketers name first and most teams still have no policy for it. A person checks anything that carries your name.

The Ruckus position

Use AI for leverage, not for identity. Speed with a point of view builds authority. Speed without one just adds to the noise. If you want the practical build, read our companion piece on an AI-enabled content system that keeps your voice, or book a discovery.
